Abstract
Frameshift mutations in a restricted portion of the arabinose operon r egulatory gene araC from Escherichia coli give rise to active AraC pro tein, likely from the in vivo synthesis of two incomplete fragments th at are active together. Synthesis of corresponding fragments, each sep arately inactive, from two plasmids within cells also resulted in comp lementation. (C) 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
