Abstract
The excitation of wake fields by a train of electron bunches with a de creasing repetition rate in a plasma is studied by means of a self-con sistent approach. It is shown that the wake wave excited by the preced ing bunches traps the succeeding ones and prevents their spreading in phase space. The acceleration of relativistic electrons by the excited wake field is investigated.
