A simple and clear model of a streamer head is proposed. By analytical
ly solving the simplest equations, approximate formulas for the stream
er velocity and the density of the plasma arising behind the streamer
head are obtained within this model. These formulas can be used to ana
lyze experiments and to verify the results of streamer simulations. Th
e distributions of the electron density, space charge, and electric fi
eld in the ionization wave, which are determined by the numerical inte
gration of the model equations, are presented. Numerical results confi
rm the applicability of the proposed formulas.
