Abstract
We present a theoretical study of the energy deposition by slow multip ly charged ions interacting with an electron gas and its dependence on the electronic configuration (excitation state) of the particle. Appl ications of the results to explain experimental findings of projectile induced electron emission and energy loss as a function of charge sta te are also discussed.
