The male, female, pupa, and larva of Meunieriella avicenniae Cook, n.
comb., are described for the first time. The species was previously kn
own only as ''Cecidomyia'' avicenniae from its galls on New World mang
roves. This species is remarkable because it shows the most primitive
state of the male postabdomen in the genus. It is now possible to conf
irm that Meunieriella belongs to the tribe Alycaulini because it share
s with all other members of that tribe the smooth, asetulose area on t
he dorsum of the female ninth abdominal segment, a character unique to
the tribe.
