Fluctuations which involve the repetitive melting and recrystallizatio
n of crystals in equilibrium with their liquid are reported. The exper
iments were performed at constant volume and temperature inside a diam
ond anvil cell. The results, which we believe are the first to show th
e importance of temporal fluctuations during a first order phase trans
ition, are not explained by any theory of Ostwald ripening.
