Apparent elongational viscosity studies were made on dilute solutions
of high molecular weight polymers using a fiber spinning apparatus des
igned for Low shear viscosity liquids with substantial elongation effe
cts. The experimental method involved the flow of solutions of polyacr
ylamide and poly(ethylene oxide) from a tube into an evacuated vessel.
Experimental results showed that the apparent elongational viscosity
obtained from the jet shape increased linearly with the stretch rate.
