Reversed phase planar chromatographic separations of hydroxy derivativ
es of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been performed with aceton
itrile - water and methanol - water as mobile phases. Separations perf
ormed both in a DS sandwich chamber (TLC) and in an overpressured cham
ber (OPLC) produced in Poland were compared after visualization of the
spots both in UV light (wavelengths 254 and 365 nm) and by means of r
eaction with fast blue B salt. Both techniques gave good results for t
he separation of the compounds; forced how techniques such as OPLC may
be suitable for routine analysis of the compounds. Analysis by GC-MS
has confirmed the presence of 1-hydroxypyrene and 9-hydroxyphenanthren
e in extracts from TLC plates used to separate the dichloromethane fra
ction isolated from airborne particulate matter sampled in the Upper S
ilesia region.
