In the framework of two research projects sponsored by ECCS, procedure
s to ascertain the concentration of hazardous substances in undergroun
d workplace atmospheres were developed and verified by measurements in
two areas. The method consists of determining the emission rate of sp
ecific hazardous substances. This rate is arithmetically related to th
e ventilation quantity in the respective workplaces. The outcome of th
is procedure is the average concentration of hazardous substances duri
ng emission. The applicability of the model could be proven in workpla
ces where conveyor belts were cold vulcanized using the agent trichlor
oethylene and where Diesel loaders operated underground. The knowledge
of parameters required for this model can help in the future to large
ly replace workplace measurements by this procedure.
