The theme of the annual tourism symposium at the Royal Geographical So
ciety on 26 October 1995 was: 'The impact of tourism on small islands'
. It brought together more than 400 delegates, a record attendance for
a fee-paying conference at the RGS. The meeting was convened by Dougl
as Lockhart (Keele University) and David Drakakis-Smith (University of
Liverpool) and the wide-ranging extent of tourist development on isla
nds gave ample scope to explore this in offshore islands in Europe ns
well as independent island micro-states in the Mediterranean, Caribbea
n and Pacific regions. Douglas Lockhart reports on the panellists' vie
ws and some of the discussions. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Lt
