We review our recent work on developing and applying quantum Monte Car
lo (QMC) methods to electronic systems. The ''special k-points'' metho
d is introduced into QMC calculations as a method for reducing ''indep
endent particle'' finite size effects. We also explain our new formula
tion of the Coulomb interaction which virtually eliminates so-called C
oulomb finite size effects. The importance of these advances for futur
e applications of QMC techniques to electronic systems is stressed.
