The adsorption of oxygen on alpha-Cu0.82Al0.18(100) has been investiga
ted using low energy ion scattering. It was found that initially oxyge
n adsorbed on Al sites and then it adsorbed on Cu sites before all Al
sites were occupied at room temperature. Al segregation induced by oxy
gen adsorption was found at oxygen exposure > 10 L. Upon heating the s
ample to 300 degrees C, oxygen that adsorbed previously on the Cu site
s bonded to thermally segregated Al atoms and kept them on the surface
. Experimental results suggest that Al oxide islands were formed upon
heating. At the sample temperature of 300 degrees C an Al oxide layer
was formed at oxygen exposure 3500 L.
