Abstract
The possibility of using a gas-insulating coating of thermally cleaved graphite to keep air away from the slag vat in alloying of steel with rare-earth metals from the slag phase by electroslag smelting was inv estigated. Efficiencies of alloying in air, in argon atmosphere, and u nder a layer of thermally cleaved graphite were compared.
