The stability constants of the ternary complexes [MAL] [where M(II) re
fers to Cu-II and Ni-II, A refers to diethylenetriamine (det) and dipr
opylenetriamine (dpt) and L refers to catecholate, o-amino phenolate,
o-phenylenediamine, oxalate, malonate, glycinate, beta-alaninate, ethy
lenediamine and 1,3-diaminopropane] have been determined potentiometri
cally using the SCOGS computer program. A reason for the more negative
Delta logK values of the ternary Cu-II complexes is discussed. The co
mplexes [Cu(DET)en](ClO4)(2) and [Ni(DET)en](ClO4)(2) have been obtain
ed and the crystal structure of the former determined by single crysta
l X-ray diffraction. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
