Abstract
The authors propose an effective bandwidth approach to connection admi ssion control in ATM networks. The aggregate arrival traffic is accura tely modelled by a two-state Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) v ia the matching of four important statistics. If the buffer is large, admission control can be achieved by computing the effective bandwidth of the two-state MMPP. Simulation tests show that approach is simple and results in higher utilisation compared with conventional methods.
