The mechanism of rutile formation from titanium slag containing 60-65%
TiO2 was studied with the aim of producing synthetic rutile concentra
tes as titanium stock. Conditions were found that ensure maximum degre
e of oxidation and maximum yield of rutile from slag. The data on slag
oxidation kinetics obtained in the study indicated that recrystalliza
tion of the rutile phase occurs at the final oxidation stage requiring
holding the slag for at least 120 min at the optimum oxidation temper
ature (900 degrees C).
