With the increased emphasis on the prevention of accidents and the add
ition of safety devices to automobiles, we enter a new era in orthoped
ic traumatology. Patients with chest and head injuries now are survivi
ng with severe pelvic and lower extremity injuries. Orthopedic surgeon
s and trauma surgeons have to work together in these challenging cases
. This article presents fractures that have a high incidence of mortal
ity and fractures with a high incidence of long-term morbidity and lon
g-term impairment.
