Abstract
A safe vaccine to half or slow the global HIV pandemic is urgently nee ded, yet the immediate prospects for an effective vaccine are poor. Ex perimental work to date suggests that live attenuated vaccines are mos t effective, hut they raise serious safety concerns. The search for al ternatives continues.
