Abstract
In the 1990s closed circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras hav e become a common feature in the public spaces of urban Britain. Drawi ng on research into city centre CCTV in general and Glasgow's City Wat ch scheme in particular, this paper examines the phenomenon in terms o f the construction of CCTV systems, the limits to their potential effe ctiveness and the resistance to their development.
