Photoabsorption and fluorescence cross sections of CF3CN have been mea
sured in the region of 6-41 eV by using synchrotron radiation. The ban
ds observed have been assigned as the Rydberg transitions of the lone
pair electrons on N and F atoms. It has been found that the C=N and C-
F stretching and FCF bending frequencies are excited in the Rydberg st
ates. Emissions from the CN(A(2) Pi(i), B-2 Sigma(+) --> X(2) Sigma(+)
) transitions have been observed even in the ionization region, and in
creased at approximate to 22 eV by the ionization of the (2e)(-1) and
(4a(1))(-1) valence electrons.
