Ha. Martin et al., TERTIARY ALANGIUM (ALANGIACEAE) IN EASTERN AUSTRALIA - EVIDENCE FROM POLLEN, Review of palaeobotany and palynology, 94(1-2), 1996, pp. 111-122
Alangium has large, distinctive pollen grains which may allow identifi
cation to species and species groups. In Australia, there is one speci
es, A. villosum (Blume) Wangerin, with two subspecies restricted to ra
inforests of the east coast of the continent. The pollen of both subsp
ecies is the distinctive A. villosum type of Reitsma (1970). Two Terti
ary pollen types of Alangium are formally described as the new form sp
ecies Clavastephanocolporites meleosus and C. blysus; these are morpho
logically similar to the A. villosum type and the Alangium salviifoliu
m type of Reitsma (1970), respectively. These records complement the n
umerous Tertiary occurrences in the Indo-Malesian region and elsewhere
.
