Abstract
A prominent reduction of the layer thickness, d(1), in the Sm A and Sm B phases with increasing temperature has been observed for a series o f side chain polymers. The maximum decrease in d(1) value for one of t he copolymers is similar to 7 Angstrom, i.e. 15% of its total value. T he influence of the chemical structure of the main chain and side grou ps on the effect has been studied. Models have been proposed for packi ng of mesogenic side groups at different temperatures.
