J. Charbucinski et al., ULTRA-LOW ACTIVITY SPECTROMETRIC PROBE FOR THE COAL-MINING INDUSTRY, Journal of radioanalytical and nuclear chemistry, 206(2), 1996, pp. 311-319
A newly developed spectrometric borehole logging tool (ZERO PROBE) has
undergone several field tests on black coal deposits in Queensland an
d New South Wales. The results of these tests are presented in the pap
er. The ZERO PROBE utilizes a Cs-137 gamma-ray source with a strength
of only 1.1 MBq, which is three orders of magnitude less than the sour
ce activities applied in standard commercial borehole logging tools. T
he field tests have proved high bed resolution of the ZERO PROBE for c
oal seam delineation, and also, the probe's suitability for quantitati
ve coal ash determination.
