The evolution of cellular and dendritic microstructure has been invest
igated for the directionally solidified single-crystal superalloy SRR
99. The analysis of the transverse sections within the mushy zone yiel
ds the solidification sequence and the solid fraction f(s) against the
temperature decrease. By means of a special treatment various theoret
ical models were applied to calculate the f(s)-variation for the used
multicomponent system. In comparison with experimental measurements a
reasonable description has been achieved.
