Sg. Langton et al., DEAFNESS AND CHOLESTEATOMA COMPLICATING FRACTURE OF THE MANDIBULAR CONDYLE, British journal of oral & maxillofacial surgery, 34(4), 1996, pp. 286-288
A case of posterior fracture-dislocation of the mandibular condyle whi
ch resulted in conductive deafness and cholesteatoma is presented. Ini
tial management by condylectomy improved auditory canal patency but fa
iled to prevent the development of cholesteatoma, necessitating mastoi
d surgery. Although major complications following fractures of the con
dyle are not common(1) the need to consider the possibility of damage
to the ear in such fractures is emphasised.
