The equilibrium and kinetics of the complexation of Co-II by folic aci
d have been studied at 25 degrees C, the ionic strength being regulate
d with KNO3 in the 5.6-7.3 pH range. Kinetic studies were performed us
ing the stopped-how method. Under our experimental conditions one proc
ess was observed; a reaction which took place within a few seconds. Th
e results are consistent with the formation of a 1:1 complex between t
he reactants and a mechanism is proposed to account for the observed b
ehaviour. Equilibrium constants for the Co-II and folic acid system, a
s well as activation parameters, are reported.
