We studied the dependence of the maximum tunneling current on external
magnetic field for large area Josephson junctions with overlap bounda
ry conditions. We used direct numerical solutions and developed a spli
t Fourier mode method to study the electromagnetic behavior. The stead
y-state pattern consists of two terms, the first of which satisfies th
e in-line-like bias current boundary conditions and has zero fluxon co
ntent. The second is treated in a mode expansion in the y direction an
d only two terms are sufficient to reproduce the direct solution of th
e two-dimensional junction for widths up to 2 tau times the Josephson
characteristic length.
