Phytochemical analysis of the whole plant of Sansevieria trifasciata,
one of the most common Agavaceae plants, has resulted in the isolation
of four new pregnane glycosides. Their structures have been determine
d by spectroscopic analysis and acid- and alkaline-catalysed hydrolysi
s to be 1 beta,3 beta-dihydroxypregna-5,16-dien-20-one glycosides. Thi
s is believed to be the first report of the isolation of the pregnane
glycosides from a plant of the family Agavaceae. Copyright (C) 1996 El
