N. Merchant et P. Dupuy, MULTICULTURAL COUNSELING AND QUALITATIVE RESEARCH - SHARED WORLDVIEW AND SKILLS, Journal of counseling and development, 74(6), 1996, pp. 537-541
In this article, similarities are identified between multicultural cou
nseling competencies and the basic assumptions and methodology of qual
itative research. Having an understanding of one's own biases, assumpt
ions, and worldviews; possessing knowledge and understanding of the cu
lturally different client's (participant's) worldview; and using appro
priate strategies and skills are characteristics that are shared by mu
lticultural counseling and qualitative research. These characteristics
are addressed under aspects of qualitative research, namely, selectio
n of the research question; researcher as instrument; relationship bet
ween researcher and participants; and data collection, analysis, and v
alidity.
