Camel pox (CP); and contagious ecthyma (CE) are widely distributed amo
ng camel population in Asia, USSR, the Middle; East, North and East Af
rica (Mc Grane and Higgins, 1986). In India, the occurrence of camel p
ox (CP) was first documented by Leese (1909) based on clinical examina
tion. Since then, some work, particularly on epidemiological and clini
co pathological aspects of pox infections in Indian camels have been p
ublished (Chauhan et al., 1985 and Chauhan and Kaushik, 1987), Relevan
t/immunological and biochemical tests have indicated an independent ca
mel pox virus species infecting camels (Munt, 1992). The present paper
provides information on the epidemiological and clinicopathological a
spects of pox infections in an organised camel farm of the National Re
search Centre on camel, Bikaner.
