Abstract
The excitation of the 6(3)P(1) and 6(1)P(1) states of Hg by polarized electrons is discussed in close relation to recent experiments. A full set of state multipoles, necessary for a complete description of the experiments, has been calculated by a relativistic distorted-wave meth od for 15 and 30 eV incident electrons. Results for the Stokes paramet ers and the spin-asymmetry parameters are also presented. A comparison between our theoretical results and the available experimental data s hows satisfactory overall agreement.
