A theoretical analysis of magnetic couplers is recounted, leading to t
he design and manufacture of prototype disc type magnetic couplers. De
sign and development of experimental test rigs are also given. Test re
sults are presented and compared with theoretical calculations. This s
hows very good agreement. The exception to the rule was the case of ax
ial load measurements, which were not accurately evaluated by the comp
utations. The geometries tested here showed the optimum design to cons
ist of rotors with eight poles, magnet thickness of 10 mm and a fillin
g factor of about 0.7.
