Abstract
This paper briefly surveys present knowledge of the magnetic and magne tospheric properties of the Earth, the Moon, Venus, Mars, Mercury, Jup iter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune as derived from in situ observations by numerous spacecraft and hundreds of investigators. It has been pre pared at the invitation of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society as a tribute to the long-term leadership of lunar and planetary astronomy by the late Gerard Peter Kuiper (190 5-1973). The author hopes that this account will help bring magnetosph eric physics into the mainstream of those subjects. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
