Abstract
We report the resolution of the hyperfine structure of the 6S(1/2)-8P( 1/2) Cs transition by means of laser saturation spectroscopy. This tra nsition is anomalously weak as discussed by zu Putlitz in 1969. The me trological potentialities of this narrow line are illustrated together with a possible scheme for a direct frequency measurement.
