Twelve potato (Solanum tuberosum) cultivars were analysed using interm
icrosatellite amplification with two 5'-anchored repeat primers. Ampli
fication products were resolved on polyacrylamide gels. In total, 24 p
olymorphic bands were scored and used to construct a dendrogram showin
g the relationships between the cultivars. The three late 19th - early
20th century cultivars studied were grouped together, as were the thr
ee accessions directly descended from S. tuberosum cv. Maris Piper. Th
ese results suggest that intermicrosatellite amplification is a potent
ially useful tool for both phenetic and genotyping studies.
