Post-bifurcation phenomena accompanying the branching of cubic crystal
s under hydrostatic pressure at instabilities associated with the vani
shing of shear moduli are studied analytically and computationally. It
is shown that pseudopotential models of the alkali metals exhibit bra
nching from cubic to tetragonal configurations, and furthermore, that
is the only branching geometry that may occur homogeneously under a st
rict hydrostatic environment when the shear modulus mu vanishes. Copyr
