Complex multi-step processes, with equilibration times varying from mi
nutes to weeks, are observed to control trace metal sorption to partic
ulate matter. A three-step first order reversible kinetic model is use
d to fit mesured data for sorption and desorption over periods of up t
o 200h. This is likely to perform better than the equilibrium partitio
ning approach under the rapidly changing environmental conditions whic
h exist in estuaries. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
