The orientation of the excited (2p(6)3p)P-2 state of Al2+, created by
electron capture in collisions of Al3+ ions with atomic H and D, is in
vestigated theoretically. The collision dynamics are described using a
n adiabatic representation of the collision complex and calculations a
re carried out in the 0.5 to 10 keV energy range. Total and differenti
al cross sections for electron capture are presented. The range of sca
ttering angles for which there is a strong propensity for orientation
of the P-2 state is determined. The influence of the short range adiab
atic potentials on the orientation at small scattering angles is discu
ssed.
