Abstract
A 75-year-old woman with severe rheumatic mitral stenosis was admitted for percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty. Two-dimensional echocardiograp hy disclosed severe calcification of the posterolateral left atrial wa ll and interatrial septum. Percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty, using th e Inoue technique, was successfully performed after a transseptal punc ture through the calcified interatrial septum, avoiding the need for s urgical intervention.
