Abstract
We propose a new model for electrical activity of cardiac tissue that incorporates the effects of cellular microstructure. As such, this mod el provides insight into the mechanism of direct stimulation and defib rillation of cardiac tissue after injection of large currents. To illu strate the usefulness of the model, numerical stimulations are used to show the difference between successful and unsuccessful defibrillatio n of large pieces of tissue.
