The possibilities offered by a mathematical model, developed at Irsid
to improve the control of the steel reheating furnaces at the hot stri
p mills, are explained in this paper. The model allows to describe acc
urately the heat transfers (in the fumes and in the slabs) and the fum
es flow field in a reheating furnace. The main studies undertaken conc
ern the effects of the burners on the thermal homogeneity of the slabs
. The complementarity of the numerical simulations and the actions und
ertaken at the Sollac fos plant are particularly shown.
