A stochastic finite element model of a one-dimensional hydrodynamic be
aring with rough surfaces (longitudinal and transverse roughnesses), c
onsidering film thickness to be a stochastic variable, has been formul
ated and steady-state characteristics studied. The results expressed a
s mean values of load carrying capacity, how rate, frictional force an
d coefficient of friction (in non-dimensional form) are in good agreem
ent with those obtained by analytical methods by previous investigator
s. Further standard deviation of pressure, at a given node, has been c
alculated for different input standard deviations of stochastic variab
le and scales of fluctuation using the first-order (perturbation)secon
d moment method.
