Abstract
platinum and its alloys ore successfully used as container materials a nd for other constructional parts mainly in the glass melting industry because of its exceptional high oxidation and corrosion resistance. T he capability of long time application at elevated temperature is achi eved by precipitation hardening. Excellent performance even of extreme ly high operating temperatures up to more than 1500 degrees C is guara nteed by dispersion hardening. The hardening mechanisms, metallurgical and high temperature mechanic properties like stress rupture and cree p properties, are discussed. The applications mainly for the productio n of high purify, homogeneous optical glasses having rising demand for LCD and TV screens but also for consumer glass products as well as fo r glass and mineral fibres are presented.
