Mc. Chung et al., RELATING STAFF BURNOUT TO CLIENTS WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR IN PEOPLEWITH A LEARNING-DIFFICULTY - PILOT-STUDY-2, The European journal of psychiatry, 10(3), 1996, pp. 155-165
The nature of burnout of twenty-six direct care staff responsible for
people with learning difficulties who show challenging behaviour was i
nvestigated. Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was used as the burnout i
ndicator and a selfconstructed Staff Questionnaire (SQ) was used for c
ollecting basic data of staff, job satisfaction and opinions on the im
plementation of programmes for staff and clients. Attempts were also m
ade to associate burnout with clients' behaviour. On the whole, the re
sults showed that the burnout of staff was high and yet they felt posi
tive working with clients and were motivated to carry on working and r
eceive further training. Their burnout seems to be more associated wit
h management issues than clients' behaviour.
