Abstract
Australia has the only substantial raw sugar industry which has all it s revenue determined by the increasingly competitive world market plac e. It may be argued that the inward looking policies of the US, Japan and the EU have lowered world prices and ensured a misallocation of re sources worldwide. The Uruguay Round has had a minimal effect in the s hort term but will have far reaching long term implications. Developme nts in the Australian sugar industry are summarised and the outlook is reviewed against this background.
