As part of the process of dosing Fort Devens in north central Massachu
setts, an intensive two year survey of vascular plants growing in the
undeveloped area (6700 acres) of the fort was completed. A total of 85
7 naturally occurring taxa in 394 genera and 121 families were identif
ied, including 18 rare taxa and 29 county records. The unusual diversi
ty of taxa for the area is due to several factors which include land u
se history and the physical setting, as well as management practices a
nd military activity which created or maintained early and mid-success
ional habitats.
