The aim of this clinical review is to highlight recent advances in imm
unology, as well as new information from selected other areas, which h
ave led to a better appreciation of the neuroimmunologic mechanisms in
volved in Multiple sclerosis (MS). New data on immunopathology, the cy
tokine network, and the role of oligodendrocytes, lymphocytes, and end
othelial cells in this disease, have produced novel therapeutic approa
ches. New information on clinical course and neuroimaging disease feat
ures, as well as the role of genetic factors and infectious agents, ha
ve also improved our understanding of the immune basis for MS.
