Photoelectron spectra of rare gas atoms interacting with 0.5 ps KrF la
ser pulses at intensities up to 10(16) W/cm(2) are reported. For inten
sities higher than the saturation intensity of the atom the envelope o
f the logarithm of the spectrum exhibits two different slopes with str
ong evidence that these originate from the superposition of the atomic
and ionic above-threshold ionisation (ATI) spectra. At high intensiti
es the ionic part of the spectrum becomes so flat that it appears plat
eau-like.
