The research objectives of this project were to carry out experimental
studies to validate the gas dynamic module and the heat transfer modu
le of the FIRAC fire simulation code developed by Los Alamos National
Laboratory. The experiments necessary to evaluate the various modules
of the code were accomplished in the Large Scale Flow Facility at New
Mexico State University. Five experiments were performed and then atte
mpts were made to simulate the results by FIRAC. It was found that err
ors within FIRAC allowed only two of the experiments to be successfull
y simulated. One of these errors was found and corrected by Los Alamos
National Laboratory personnel, but the remaining errors are still und
er study. The results of the two simulations that did run showed FIRAC
closely predicts the trends of the gas dynamics and heat transfer of
the experiments.
