Abstract
In this review some of the mechanisms peas (Pisum sativum L.) have evo lved for coping with microorganisms are covered. These adaptations are then compared with ways in which other host plants cope with microorg anisms. The aim is to show that there are similarities between symbiot ic and pathogenic host-microbe interactions and that a more profound u nderstanding of these mechanisms and their side effects may lead to th e development of new agricultural practices which will increase sustai nability by taking advantage of already evolved and functioning mechan isms for nutrient supply and biological control.
